Weekly Training Log

The following were my running workouts for the week of March 23, 2014 and 13 weeks out from the Grandma's Marathon. I know I need to run more consistently if I want to perform well at the marathon but this was the first week I began incorporating speed work and I was not recovering so I took a few extra rest days. Hopefully the upcoming week will be closer to the plan.

Sunday - Rest
Monday - Interval Workout 12x400 repeat at 6:40 pace with a 400 recovery jog.
Total Distance 6.5 miles: Weekly Distance 6.5
Tuesday - Scheduled rest day, biked on stationary bike for 30 minutes.
 Weekly Distance 6.5 miles
Wednesday - Tempo Run 5 miles at 7:53 pace with warm-up and cool down.
Total Distance 6 miles: Weekly Distance 12.5 miles
Thursday - Rest (My resting pulse was way above average so I took the day off)
 Weekly Distance 12.5 miles
Friday - 7.6 miles Easy run.
Total Distance 7.6 miles: Weekly Distance 20.1
Saturday - 9 miles Easy run (Ran a 5k race in 34:50 as part of the long run)
Total Distance 9 miles: Weekly Distance 29.1

Weekly Outlook - Overall I handled the mileage well and my knee doesn't feel bad yet. The numb spot in my shin is back although maybe it never left since it is caused by nerve damage. I've begun rehab exercises for shin splints and will keep a report on how that goes.

Additional Musings - Making time to exercise
I am happy I decided to train for another marathon since it finally got me to make running a high priority and something I began scheduling into my day the same as teaching. I sometimes have to get creative with either early morning or late evening workouts but it has been worth it. I have to challenge myself every week to make exercise a priority especially now as I am going through a particularly bad bought of intermittent insomnia. It is not easy but I've never finished a run and felt worse for having made the decision to get out there. I hope wherever you are in your life; you are finding a way to get active and stay healthy.

Get outside and run, jog, walk, or whatever; just don't stop moving,

John
